Frequently asked

The most common questions about soaking in New Mexico — day visits, free springs, Truth or Consequences, natural versus heated water and closures.

Can I visit New Mexico hot springs for the day?

Most of them, yes: 21 of the 25 places on this page take day visitors, whether by day pass, hourly private tub or a free hike-in pool. Fire Water Lodge and Hot Springs Glamp Camp keep soaking for overnight guests only, and a few others, like Ten Thousand Waves, Riverbend and Faywood, work by reservation.

Are there free hot springs in New Mexico?

Yes, 10 on this page: Spence Hot Springs, San Antonio Hot Springs, Soda Dam Hot Springs, Montezuma Hot Springs (Las Vegas Hot Springs), Manby Hot Springs (Stagecoach Hot Springs), Black Rock Hot Springs, Frisco Hot Spring, Jordan Hot Springs, Lightfeather Hot Springs (Middle Fork) and Turkey Creek Hot Springs. Most are primitive rock-lined pools in national forest or along the Rio Grande, some reached only by a long hike with river crossings. Check the access line on each card and watch river levels in spring.

What is Truth or Consequences known for?

Its hot springs bathhouse district. 7 places on this page sit within a few blocks of each other downtown, most filling private tubs with natural hot spring water by the session, and several renting rooms with their own tubs. The town took its name from a game show in 1950.

Are all of these natural hot springs?

Not all. Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort and Ten Thousand Waves use heated well or aquifer water rather than a natural hot spring; they are included because they are the soaking options closest to Santa Fe. The rest use natural hot spring water.

Is McCauley Hot Springs open?

It is left off this page for now. After the 2026 McCauley Springs Fire, the Forest Service closed Battleship Rock and the East Fork Trail from Battleship Rock to Highway 4 until further notice. As of October 7, 2026, we have not found an official notice that the trail has reopened.
