Frequently asked

Quick answers on getting from Santa Fe to a soak — the closest options, day-trip range, free springs, Truth or Consequences, swimsuit rules and closures.

What is the closest hot spring to Santa Fe?

Two spas sit right on the edge of town, Ten Thousand Waves and Ojo Santa Fe, but both use heated well or aquifer water rather than a natural hot spring. The closest natural hot springs resort is Ojo Caliente, about 1h 04m north by car, with day passes sold without reservations.

Can you visit a hot spring near Santa Fe as a day trip?

Yes. 11 of the 19 places on this page are within a two-hour drive: the in-town spas, Ojo Caliente, Montezuma near Las Vegas, the Jemez Mountains and the Rio Grande Gorge near Taos. Only Fire Water Lodge and Hot Springs Glamp Camp keep soaking for overnight guests.

Are there free hot springs near Santa Fe?

Yes, 6 of them: Montezuma Hot Springs (Las Vegas Hot Springs), Spence Hot Springs, Soda Dam Hot Springs, Manby Hot Springs (Stagecoach Hot Springs), San Antonio Hot Springs and Black Rock Hot Springs. They are undeveloped or volunteer-kept pools with few or no facilities, and some need a hike or a river crossing. Each card has the access details.

Is Truth or Consequences worth the drive from Santa Fe?

As an overnight, yes. The town is about three hours south on I-25, and 7 bathhouses on this page sit within a few blocks of each other, most renting private tubs of natural hot spring water by the session. Riverbend requires a reservation for day visitors, and some places are for overnight guests only.

Do the hot springs near Santa Fe require swimsuits?

It depends on the place. Ojo Caliente, Ojo Santa Fe and Ten Thousand Waves require swimwear in shared pools and leave it optional in private tubs. The Forest Service says nudity at Spence Hot Springs is cited. Several wild springs along the Rio Grande are described by guides as clothing optional. Each card lists the policy where we have it.

Is McCauley Hot Springs open?

It is left off this page for now. After the 2026 McCauley Springs Fire, the Forest Service closed Battleship Rock and the East Fork Trail from Battleship Rock to Highway 4 until further notice. As of October 7, 2026, we have not found an official notice that the trail has reopened.
