Best hot springs in Montana

Montana’s hot springs are nearly all developed: resort pools, historic plunges, lodges and guest ranches built around natural hot water. They cluster around Bozeman and the Paradise Valley, west toward Helena, Boulder and Anaconda, in the Bitterroot and Big Hole valleys, and in the small town of Hot Springs in the northwest. This page gathers every open spring in the state, grouped by kind.

Frequently asked

The most common questions about soaking in Montana — day passes, cost, the town of Hot Springs, clothing rules and closures.

Can I visit Montana hot springs for the day?

Most of them, yes: 17 of the 24 places on this page sell day passes or take walk-in soakers. Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, The Lodge at Lolo Hot Springs, Alameda's Hot Springs Retreat, Sophia Springs, Pipestone Village & Hotsprings, Sleeping Child Hot Springs and K Bar L Ranch & Medicine Springs keep their pools or tubs for overnight guests only, so you need a booking to soak there.

Are there free hot springs in Montana?

Not among the places on this page — Montana's soaking spots are almost all developed and charge admission. The cheapest are the self-service honor-box pools in the town of Hot Springs, Big Medicine Hot Springs and Rose's Plunge, where you leave a few dollars in cash. Each card lists the current price where we have it.

What is in the town of Hot Springs, Montana?

The small town on the Flathead Indian Reservation has 6 soaking places on this page within a few miles of each other: Symes Hot Springs Hotel & Mineral Baths, Alameda's Hot Springs Retreat, Sophia Springs, Wild Horse Hot Springs, Big Medicine Hot Springs and Rose's Plunge. They range from a historic hotel and lodging with private tubs to honor-box pools. Big Medicine sits on tribal land, where non-members need a CSKT conservation license for recreation.

Are any Montana hot springs clothing-optional?

Only at certain times. Lolo Hot Springs Resort and Wild Horse Hot Springs have rules that depend on the hour or the setting, and the rest list swimwear as required where a rule is published. The clothing line on each card gives the details.

Is Elkhorn Hot Springs open?

Not at the moment. As of October 6, 2026, the operator says all operations are suspended because the Sand Creek Fire is burning less than a mile from the lodge. It is left off this page until it reopens.
