Best hot springs in Idaho

The hot springs in Idaho run from developed town pools and family resorts to wild, undeveloped soaks on public land — and the wild ones far outnumber the rest. Most sit along the state's mountain rivers, free to use and reached by forest road, a short trail or a river ford at low water. This page gathers every open spring in the state, grouped by kind, with water temperatures, prices and clothing rules on each card.

Frequently asked

The most common ways people slice this list — by cost, by clothing rules, by whether you can walk in for the day, and by what it takes to get there.

Are Idaho's wild hot springs free to visit?

Yes. 59 of the 98 springs on this page are free to soak, and almost all of them are wild, undeveloped pools on public land with no gate and no attendant. The developed places — the town pools, historic spas and resorts — charge admission instead, and each card lists what they cost.

Which Idaho hot springs are clothing-optional?

Clothing-optional soaking is mostly a backcountry thing here. Swimwear is required at the town pools and family resorts, while a number of the wild springs are clothing-optional by custom rather than by rule. 11 springs on this page are marked clothing-optional, so read the clothing line on each card before you go.

Can I visit for the day, or do I have to stay overnight?

Most are day-use. The wild springs are open to anyone during daylight, and 30 of the developed places sell day passes. 33 springs have lodging on site if you'd rather stay the night, and a handful of cabin and ranch properties are overnight-only — you can't drop in for a soak without booking a room.

Do I need a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle?

For the resorts and town pools, no — they sit on paved roads with parking. The wild springs are another matter: many are down rough, washboarded forest roads where high-clearance or four-wheel-drive is advised, especially in wet weather, and a few can only be reached by fording a river at low water. The access line on each card describes the road and the walk.

Which Idaho hot springs are open in winter?

Access narrows in the cold months. Many of the forest roads that lead to the backcountry springs close from around October until spring, so a good share of the wild pools are reachable only from late spring through fall. The developed pools in towns like Lava Hot Springs stay open year-round. If you're planning a winter trip, read the access line closely — it flags seasonal closures.
