Frequently asked

Quick answers on getting from Portland to a soak — the closest options, day-trip range, fees and passes, and where you can stay the night.

What is the closest hot spring to Portland?

Bonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa in North Bonneville, Washington, is the closest, about 54m by car across the Columbia River.

Can you visit a hot spring near Portland as a day trip?

Yes. 4 of the springs on this page are within a two-hour drive, almost all of them in the Columbia River Gorge. The Cascade springs south of the city — Breitenbush, the McKenzie River soaks, McCredie and Kah-Nee-Ta — take two to three hours each way and work better as a long day or an overnight.

Are there free, natural hot springs near Portland?

A few. Lower Breitenbush, Bigelow and Wind River are free, undeveloped soaks. Cougar (Terwilliger) charges a per-person day-use fee and McCredie a per-vehicle fee. The rest are resorts and retreats that sell day passes or include soaking with a stay — Tenzen is for overnight guests only.

Is Bagby Hot Springs open?

Not at the moment. Bagby, normally under two hours from Portland, has been closed since August 2026 because of the Austin Fire, and a Forest Service closure order runs through December 31, 2026, unless it is lifted earlier. It is left off this list until it reopens.

Which hot springs near Portland have lodging?

Bonneville and Carson in the Gorge are full hotels, and Tenzen rents six private cabins, each with its own geothermal tub. In the Cascades, Breitenbush has lodge rooms, cabins and campsites with meals included, Belknap has lodge rooms, cabins and campsites on the McKenzie River, and Kah-Nee-Ta offers motel rooms, teepees and an RV park.

Are there clothing-optional hot springs near Portland?

Yes. Breitenbush is clothing-optional in its soaking areas, and so are the wild springs — Lower Breitenbush, Bigelow, Cougar (Terwilliger), McCredie and Wind River. Belknap requires swimwear, and the spa services at Carson are for adults 18 and older. Each listing notes the clothing policy where we have it.
