Frequently asked

Quick answers on getting from Bend to a soak — the closest options, day-trip range, fees and passes, and where you can stay the night.

What is the closest hot spring to Bend?

Paulina Lake Hot Springs is the closest, about 54m by car, in the Newberry Volcano caldera. The last stretch is on foot.

Can you visit a hot spring near Bend as a day trip?

Yes. 7 of the springs on this page are within a two-hour drive, most of them west over the Cascades on the McKenzie River and near Oakridge. Breitenbush, Umpqua, Summer Lake and Crystal Crane are two to three hours away and suit an overnight better — Summer Lake does not allow day visits at all.

Are there free hot springs near Bend?

Bigelow and Lower Breitenbush are free, undeveloped soaks. Paulina Lake, Cougar (Terwilliger), McCredie and Umpqua are also wild springs, but each requires a parking pass or day-use fee. The resorts and retreats sell day passes or include soaking with a stay.

Which hot springs near Bend have lodging?

Belknap on the McKenzie River has lodge rooms, cabins and campsites; Breitenbush has lodge rooms, cabins and campsites with meals included; and Kah-Nee-Ta offers motel rooms, teepees and an RV park. In the high desert, Summer Lake rents cabins and guest houses, and Crystal Crane has teepees, cabins, inn rooms and camping.

Can you reach the hot springs near Bend in winter?

Not all of them. The road to Paulina Lake typically closes from mid-November until spring, so the lakeside pools are a summer and fall trip. Kah-Nee-Ta keeps its pools open Thursday to Monday from mid-October through March. Treat the drive times here as fair-weather estimates, especially over the Cascade passes.

Are there clothing-optional hot springs near Bend?

Breitenbush is clothing-optional in its soaking areas, as are the wild springs — Bigelow, Cougar (Terwilliger), McCredie, Umpqua and Lower Breitenbush. Belknap requires swimwear, and Summer Lake and Crystal Crane have mixed rules that vary by pool. Each listing notes the clothing policy where we have it.
