Frequently asked

Quick answers on soaking in the eastern US — where the springs are, how warm they are and who can go.

Are there natural hot springs in the eastern US?

Yes, but only a few places where you can soak in them. Most US hot springs are in the western states. In the East, spring water is used in a handful of historic spa towns: Hot Springs in Arkansas, Berkeley Springs in West Virginia, Bath County in Virginia and Hot Springs in North Carolina. This page lists all 8 places there that we could confirm as open.

Which eastern hot spring is the warmest?

The water at Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas comes out of the ground at about 143°F and is cooled before it reaches the baths. The Warm Springs Pools in Virginia are about 98°F. At Berkeley Springs the springs flow at about 74°F, and the bathhouses heat the mineral water to 102°F for private baths.

Can I soak without staying overnight?

At 6 of the 8 places, yes: the bathhouses, day spas and pools sell baths or sessions to visitors who are not staying there. Hotel Hale in Arkansas has its spring-fed tubs in the suites, for overnight guests only. The Arlington's thermal bathhouse takes walk-ins as space allows, but its site does not say outright that non-guests can book, so call ahead. Many places ask you to book ahead; each card lists the rules we could confirm.

Can I soak in the springs outdoors?

Mostly not. Hot Springs National Park does not allow soaking in the springs themselves, and at Berkeley Springs and in Bath County you soak inside historic bathhouses. The exception is Hot Springs Resort & Spa in North Carolina, where private outdoor tubs along Spring Creek are booked by the hour; it lost most of its tubs to Hurricane Helene in 2024 and has reopened with fewer.

Why is the Omni Homestead not on this page?

This page lists only places we could confirm as open for soaking. The Omni Homestead resort in Hot Springs, Virginia, stays off until we can confirm on its official site whether its spring-fed pool is open to visitors who are not staying at the resort.
